Myth 2: Lifting Weights Will Turn You Into This Guy

Lifting weights on its own is an awesome thing.  Lifting weights coupled with a decent cardio schedule is even better.  Lifting weights when over-supplementing or taking steroids is not healthy.

When it comes to lifting weights women especially are hesitant.  When questioned about their apprehension most use the excuse, “I don’t want to look like a man.”  While I myself would not encourage a woman to look like a man, I definitely believe the benefits of weight training far out way this non-existent risk.  The bottom line is, that without a heavy testosterone supplement or a daily dose of illegal steroids this danger is nearly impossible.

So what are the benefits of weight training?  Fitness explains that the benefits for women include weight loss or weight gain prevention by giving your body the ability to burn more calories each day.  If coupled with cardio your bodies ability to fight fat grows even more.  Weight training also helps prevent or fight arthritis, will reduce resting heart rate and blood pressure, and will increase strength and endurance.

Shape lays out 8 reason why every woman should be lifting heavier weights:

  • You’ll Torch Body Fat
  • You’ll Look More Defined
  • You’ll Fight Osteoperosis
  • You’ll Burn More Calories
  • You’ll Build Strength Faster
  • You’ll Lose Belly Fat
  • You’ll Feel Empowered
  • You’ll Prevent Injury

So the next time you go to the gym, don’t spend hours on the treadmill because you don’t know what else to do.  Ask a trainer or someone who is lifting where you should start.  Most people at the gym will be happy to help you.  As with anything else, it begins by doing something.
